BeaterReview Rates and Reviews Used Cars in the $500-3,000 Range [Buying Cars]

BeaterReview Rates and Reviews Used Cars in the $500-3,000 RangeLots of people are looking for "beater" cars these days. These cars may not have a smooth ride or many features, but they do have the lowest per-mile cost of ownership and they're great for students, debt assassins, and those who need a car but don't want to pay for a newer one. BeaterReview gives the lowdown on 40+ of these cars, from the 3-valve 93-2000 Geo Metro to the 76-86 Mercedes W123 series.

Yes, very few of these cars are exciting; not many of us scour Craigslist for reasonably priced Toyota Tercels or Oldsmobile Cutlass Cieras, but there are a few interesting diamonds-in-the-rough here as well such as the Jaguar XJ6 or the aforementioned Mercedes W123 series. The reviews are written entertainingly and give you a snapshot of the car, any big problems, and what to look out for when you're test driving that model.

The only drawback to the site is that is rarely updated. Yes, there were two reviews within the past month, but previous to that there was a sixteen-month dry spell. Let them know there are lots of people eager to drive Jeep Grand Wagoneers and Mazda Miatas out there and hopefully they'll begin produce regularly again. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to driving my 2006 Scion xB until it acquires beater status in another 14 years.

Fisker Karma recall is official, 239 cars will need their battery packs swapped

The folks at Fisker are probably more excited to see the calendar roll over than anyone, as a tumultuous 2011 comes to an end with another setback for the Karma. A battery issue previously thought to affect around 50 cars will actually result in the recall of 239. GigaOM points out an NHTSA notice confirming a problem with the positioning of hose clamps on the high-voltage Li-Ion batteries. It could result in said hoses leaking coolant into the battery creating the risk of an electrical short-circuit (still not seeing how this is a bad thing) and fire (oh), which the company will resolve by replacing the batteries. The recall probably covers everyone out there rolling like Walden Schmidt, since the CEO announced December 21st that 225 cars had been shipped and its factory was producing 25 cars per day. Still, assuming the ~$96k price tag isn't an issue, would you really let a little thing like potentially bursting into flames keep you away from such a sleek, smooth handling luxury coupe that puts 657hp of hybrid power at your disposal? Neither would we.

Mexico Police Tortured 5 Suspects: Report

MEXICO CITY -- Mexican human rights authorities say five men detained in the killings of two agents and a car-bomb attack in Ciudad Juarez were tortured by federal police to confess their roles in the crimes.

The National Human Rights Commission said Sunday the country must investigate six federal officers and a doctor who didn't report signs of severe beating.

Police had accused one man of being a lookout in a July 2010 car-bomb attack. They had also accused the five men of killing two police officers.

Police have dropped the accusations, but the men remain in jail on drugs and weapons charges.

Federal police said the men were members of the La Linea gang when they were arrested in August 2010 in the border city.

Nigeria: Christmas attacks death toll rises to 42 (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? Gunmen killed two civilians in a northeast Nigeria town plagued by attacks from a radical Muslim sect, an official said Friday, as a hospital official said one more person died from Christmas attacks blamed on the sect, raising the toll to 42.

Military spokesman Lt. Col. Hassan Ifijeh Mohammed told The Associated Press that the attack occurred after Friday afternoon prayers in a market near a mosque in the city of Maiduguri. Mohammed said the gunmen wounded a third person.

He said authorities believe the incident could either be a robbery attempt or another attack by a feared radical sect known as Boko Haram which has carried out a series of attacks and assassinations in the area.

Also on Friday, a hospital official said one more person died of injuries after a Christmas Day blast that struck St. Theresa Catholic Church near Nigeria's capital, bringing the death toll from Christmas attacks to 42.

The official, who asked not to be named because he is not permitted to speak to the press, said the victim died late Thursday after Sunday's blast outside the church.

A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency reported 37 deaths as of Thursday evening in the blast near Abuja.

Four more people were killed in other Christmas violence blamed on a radical Muslim sect that wants to impose Shariah law in Africa's most populous nation.

The Boko Haram sect claimed responsibility for the coordinated Christmas Day attacks launched across Africa's most populous nation.

South Florida airports offering more healthy food

There's no need to eat junk food at airports anymore.

With passengers becoming more diet-conscious, South Florida's airports now offer sandwiches and salads filled with hummus, sprouts, spinach, carrots and other healthy stuff.

The items have appeared in just the past year, providing greater choices to those who prefer to eat in airports rather than pay for meals on planes.

"I'm not ever going to say it's going to be a gourmet experience," said Jan Norris, of West Palm Beach, a freelance food writer and a contributor to the Sun Sentinel's food section. "But airports are at least trying to give travelers options now."

Airport officials call healthy food a "growing trend."

It's "a response to customer demand," said Greg Chin, spokesman for Miami International Airport, which was recently ranked sixth among 15 major U.S. airports for offering "low-fat, high-fiber, cholesterol-free vegetarian" options.

The survey was conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a non-profit organization based in Washington that promotes preventive medicine and good nutrition.

Among the healthier offerings now available at local airports:

At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Chef Allen's 2 Go offers key lime tuna salad with plantain chips, a dish that includes organic mixed greens, tomato salsa and cilantro vinaigrette.

At Palm Beach International Airport, Rooney's Public House offers an Asian chicken salad with mixed greens, mandarin oranges, snow peas, noodles and spicy peanut dressing.

At Miami International, the Ice Box Caf? offers the Health Nut Sandwich, composed of hummus, sprouts, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes and spicy feta spread on multigrain bread.

Teresa Coholan of Boca Raton, a frequent flier, said that/ if there has been an improvement in airport food, she hasn't seen it yet ? at least at Fort Lauderdale.

"Once you go through security, there is nothing to eat at that airport," she said. "Everything else is pre-packaged, ice-cold sandwiches and stuff like that."

By comparison, she said that at Boston's Logan International Airport, "there are all kinds of restaurants past security. There's a big selection."
