Facebook jumps privacy hurdle in Ireland

Tineka Smith Published 22 December 2011

Facebook has scored a victory in its never-ending battle over privacy

Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner has announced the outcome of the results of its investigation into Facebook's data protection policies, and confirmed that he does not believe that Facebook is building 'Shadow Profiles' of data about people who are not logged into Facebook.

"We are pleased that following three months of rigorous examination, the DPC report demonstrates how Facebook adheres to European data protection principles and complies with Irish law," announced Facebook in a blog today.

The investigation goes back to October of this year when Ireland's Office of the Data Protection Commissioner said that it was to audit Facebook's International HQ in Dublin because of complaints about the social networking site keeping data that was supposedly deleted. The Europe vs Facebook campaign had also claimed that Facebook was creating profiles of people without a Facebook account.

Personal user data for target advertising were found to be legitimate by the DPC along with third party applications. The DPC did suggest, however, that Facebook's Tag feature could have been executed in a more transparent way. It has been recommended that Facebook take a 'best practice' approach and be more transparent to users by displaying additional notifications to users in Europe and offering more information about the feature.

Facebook has agreed to delete data that is not needed and tighten up its privacy practices. The social networking site has also agreed to a follow up review in 2012 and to incorporate the following:

  • Offer additional notifications to European users about Facebook's photo Tag Suggest feature so that they can decide whether or not to use this feature to help people tag them in photos
  • Change a number of our policies related to retention and deletion of data including how data is logged when people access websites with social plugins to minimise the amount of information collected about people who are not logged in to Facebook
  • Work with the DPC to improve the information that people using Facebook are given about how to control their information both on Facebook and when using applications

No Ice Cream Sandwich For Galaxy S And Galaxy Tab

Galaxy S owners will be disappointed to hear that despite being having a device nearly alike to the ICS-friendly specs like Nexus S, the Korean electronics giant has said on official blog that the company?s first Galaxy device won?t be receiving the official upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Galaxy 4 Varaints

Along with the original Galaxy S, the 7-inch Galaxy Tab too won?t be able to join the party along with ?the ICS-upgradable devices, including Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Note, Galaxy R, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7, and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.?

Samsung Tomorrow states that the TouchWiz is the major obstacle here as none of the device has enough RAM and/or ROM to host it and the whole of its Samsung-designed accessories without lacking the quality. Taking into consideration the countless US versions of the Galaxy S running with similar hardware specs, it is not clear whether your Captivates and Epic4Gs would be able to get Ice Cream Sandwich or you need to have your hand on any new device.

Now the question arises what actually the Galaxy S users do. If you are one of those who don?t want to switch to other handsets and really don?t like the TouchWiz, there is always a custom ROM route. If the TouchWiz has been removed from the update, the Galaxy S will become capable of running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with no trouble at all. GSMArena states, while the experience is certainly not smooth, but it is also not despicable.

Saturday 24th December, 2011 (ANI)

Festive fever gripped people across northeast and north India as Christmas is just around the corner and people rejoiced by singing Christmas carols and exchanging gifts with each other.

A mesmerizing scenario was witnessed in Agartala as people were seen singing and enjoying Christmas carols on the streets.

Davis, a carol singer, said that the festival of Christmas would bring prosperity and happiness in the lives of people.

"2000 years ago in a simple manger he (Jesus) was born as a prince of peace and his message was sowing the seeds of peace in the world and in the hearts of people, in the families, in the societies. Today we need that peace in our families, within ourselves and the communities in which we live in," he said.

Small girls were seen dressed as fairies and boys dressed as Santa Claus- in his trademark red dress, with long, white beard.

Shopkeepers have also registered a rise in the sale of decorative items during this festive season.

A large number of tourists thronged to picturesque town of Shimla to participate in celebrations of Christmas and New Year.

Local hoteliers and travel agents expressed happiness, as their business boomed.

"Entire Shimla and all the members of association of travel agents along with Hotels are very excited for the Christmas preparations. We have been receiving many bookings for Christmas and New Year celebrations. We have already done with 90 percent of occupancy and if there will be snowfall, more numbers of tourists are expected," said Naren Shahi, a travel agent. (ANI)

Oil prices rise on lower inventories

?Oil prices rose Wednesday after a government report showed a dramatic drop in U.S. crude supplies.

Benchmark crude rose $1.43 to finish at $98.67 a barrel in New York. Brent crude was up 98 cents, ending at $107.71 a barrel in London.

Oil inventories typically fall at the end of the year because refiners draw down their inventories for tax reasons, but Wednesday's drop was far larger than analysts expected.

The Energy Information Administration said Wednesday that inventories fell by 10.6 million barrels. Analysts on average forecast a drop of 2.3 million barrels, according to Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill.

Phil Flynn, an analyst at PFG Best in Chicago, said inventory declines in recent weeks have been slower than normal, so refiners were likely playing catch-up. "They are hiding it from the tax man," he said.

After the first of the year, refiners will start building up their supplies again.?

UK's Queen visits Prince Philip after heart scare (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Queen Elizabeth visited her 90-year-old husband Prince Philip in hospital on Saturday where Britain's longest-serving royal consort was recovering from surgery to ease chest pains he had suffered in the days before Christmas.

Buckingham Palace said the operation to clear a blocked heart artery was a success, but Philip appeared bound to miss much of the royals' Christmas celebrations at their rural Sandringham estate.

Heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and siblings Prince Edward, Prince Andrew and Princess Anne also visited Papworth hospital near Cambridge to see their recuperating father, who said this year he wanted to wind down some of his royal duties.

"Prince Philip was in good spirits," a spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace said, describing the visits. "He will remain in hospital under observation for a short period."

Philip had been preparing to enjoy Christmas with his family - including grandson Prince William and his new wife Catherine - at Sandringham in east England, with an exchange of gifts on Christmas Eve and a Boxing Day shoot among the highlights.

The Duke of Edinburgh, known for his outspoken and sometimes brusque manner, has had a hectic year of engagements in 2011 including the wedding of William and Catherine, entertaining U.S. President Barack Obama and a trip to Australia.

There will be little chance to rest in 2012 when 85-year-old Elizabeth, whose annual Christmas Day address will focus on the importance of family, celebrates her 60th year on the throne with a tour of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

BLOCKED ARTERY

Philip, who married Elizabeth in 1947, was taken to Papworth, one of Britain's main heart and chest centers, about 60 miles away near Cambridge, late on Friday.

"The Duke of Edinburgh was found to have a blocked coronary artery which caused his chest pains," the palace said. "This was treated successfully by the minimally invasive procedure of coronary stenting."

The minor operation involves using a catheter to insert small tube into the artery to clear any blockages.

Philip had attended a lunch for staff a week ago and had been on "very good form," the BBC said.

"He has had these chest pains before and I don't think it's anything untoward, but given his age they are being safe rather than sorry," former royal press spokesman Dickie Arbiter said.

Despite his age, Philip has been in generally robust health this year, ploughing through a busy array of charity work and social engagements.

A pivotal figure in the House of Windsor, he has a reputation as a fiercely loyal consort who prefers outdoor pursuits to introspection.

However, in a BBC interview to mark his 90th birthday in June he said he was hoping for a quieter life in older age.

"I reckon I've done my bit," he said. "I want to enjoy myself a bit now with less responsibility, less frantic rushing about, less preparation, less trying to think of something to say."

Britain's tabloid newspapers have delighted over the years in recounting his many public gaffes.

He once told British students in China: "If you stay here much longer, you'll be slitty-eyed."

Born on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921, Philip served in Britain's Royal Navy before marrying Elizabeth. They have four children, including the heir to the throne, Charles.
