Denver rolls, keeps top spot in AP Pro32 rankings

NEW YORK (AP) ? Peyton Manning and his Broncos are closing in on the playoffs as the top team in the AP Pro32 NFL power rankings.

Denver strengthened its grip on the top spot Wednesday following its 10th win in a row, receiving nine first-place votes and 381 points in balloting by The Associated Press panel of 12 media members who regularly cover the league.

The AFC West champion Broncos (12-3) close out the regular season at home against Kansas City (2-13), 32nd and last in the rankings. The final AP Pro32 rankings will be released next Wednesday.

The NFC South champion Atlanta Falcons (13-2) moved up two places to second with one first-place vote and 363 points. Last week, the Broncos were first by three points over San Francisco, which dropped to sixth after being blown out by Seattle.

"Eleven in a row (after KC this weekend) and primed for a Super Bowl run," Rich Gannon of CBS Sports/Sirius XM said in voting the Broncos first.

"As expected the Broncos have become a scoring machine that also has good pass rushers. Still a chance they are the No. 1 seed in the AFC," Pat Kirwan of SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com said.

The Seahawks (one first-place vote) were up two spots to fifth after routing the 49ers 42-13 on Sunday night.

"They have scored 120 points more than their last three opponents and officially have become the team no one wants to play in the postseason," Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune said.

Despite the loss, the 49ers still received a first-place vote.

"Admittedly, a HUGE mulligan," said ESPN's Chris Berman in sticking with the 49ers at No. 1.

Green Bay was up three spots to third after its 55-7 rout of Tennessee, while New England dropped a place to fourth after hanging on for a 23-16 win over No. 31 Jacksonville.

"If there's any solace from an unimpressive win at Jacksonville, the Patriots also seemed disinterested in their final two regular-season games last year before reaching Super Bowl," Alex Marvez of Foxsports.com said.

"Yes, the Patriots are hard to figure out, but this isn't: They're always a Super Bowl factor as long as Tom Brady is healthy," Clark Judge of CBSSports.com said.

Indianapolis, which clinched a playoff spot with a win over Kansas City, moved up to 10th in a season in which the Colts started out No. 32 in the first AP Pro32 rankings.

"Can an assistant coach be named the NFL's coach of the year? Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians has put himself in that position for his interim work filling in for ailing head coach Chuck Pagano this season," Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News said.

And yes, Arians can win the award.

Minnesota, meanwhile, rose to No. 12 this week, and needs a win over Green Bay to earn a playoff spot. The Vikings started the season 29th.

"Adrian Peterson is finally getting a little help from his friends," Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune said.

Philadelphia began the season No. 8 and dropped three more spots to No. 27 after a 27-20 loss to Washington. The Redskins, meanwhile, went the other way, starting at No. 25 and rising to No. 9 this week.

"It's very simple for the resurgent Redskins: beat the Cowboys on Sunday, and the division is theirs," Bob Glauber of Newsday said. "Would be an incredible finish for a team that looked to be out of it at 3-6."

Russia's Putin: I'll sign law banning US adoptions

Russian President Vladimir Putin claims the U.S. is "poisoning ties" between the two countries with a law that bans Russians who abuse human rights and is backing a Russian draft law banning adoption by Americans. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled on Thursday that he would sign a controversial bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children, a defiant move against the United States that has angered some who argue that it victimizes children to make a political point.

The law could block dozens of Russian children expected to be adopted by American families from leaving the country and cut off one of the main international routes for Russian children to leave orphanages that are often dismal. Russia is the single biggest source of adopted children in the United States, with more than 60,000 Russian children being taken in by Americans over the past two decades.

The bill is retaliation for an American law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators and part of an increasingly confrontational stance by the Kremlin against the West.

Related: Americans may lose right to adopt Russian children

Putin said U.S. authorities routinely let Americans suspected of violence toward Russian adoptees go unpunished ? a clear reference to Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler for whom the bill is named. The child was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Putin indicated that he would endorse the measure.

"I still don't see any reasons why I should not sign it," he told a televised meeting, The Associated Press reported. He went on to say that he "intends" to sign it.

Children's rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov on Wednesday said that 46 children who were about to be adopted in the United States would remain in Russia in case the bill comes into effect. On Thursday, he petitioned the president to extend the ban to other countries.

John and Renee Thomas with their son, Jack, 7, who was adopted from Russia at the age of 3. Jack is hoping for his brother, Nikoly, now in a Russian orphanage, to join him in the United States.

Would-be adoptive parents in the United States are left hanging by Putin's position on the bill, which was passed by Russian lawmakers last week.

Among them are John and Renee Thomas of Minnetonka, Minn., Kari Huus of NBC News reported.?The Thomases have already adopted Jack, 7, from Russia. When they found out he had a little brother, they began the process to try to adopt him, too. The wait has stretched to four years, and now the adoption may be in danger.?

"When Jack is asked about his family, he talks about his brother," John Thomas said. "He always asks, 'When is he coming home?' We just tell him we?re waiting for the call."

UNICEF estimates that there are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, while only 18,000 Russians are now waiting to adopt a child.

The U.S. State Department again registered its opposition to the Russian legislation.

"The welfare of children is simply too important to tie to the political aspects of our relationship," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said Thursday. "Additionally, we are deeply troubled by the provisions in the bill that would restrict the ability of Russian civil society organizations to work with American partners." ?

Critics of the bill have left dozens of stuffed toys and candles outside the parliament's lower and upper houses to express solidarity with Russian orphans.?

An on-line petition urging the Kremlin to scrap the bill had garnered more than 100,000 Russian signatures by Tuesday.?

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Nintendo Wii U vs. Nintendo Wii ... fight!

Nintendo Wii U vs Nintendo Wii fight!

The first thing we noticed about Nintendo's next console when we last got our hands on it was the length -- the Wii U is Nintendo's longest console yet. Sure, sure, there's a tablet controller and HD graphics and yadda yadda yadda. That's immaterial. What matters here, folks, is how the new hardware -- the console itself -- physically stacks up against the first Wii. As you'll see in our gallery, length is the least of the Wii U's changes: in the Wii U, Nintendo added two more USB 2.0 ports up front and rounded out its hard right angles, for starters. Around back, the port layout of the Wii is nigh-on identical with that of the Wii U, albeit with the fan moved an inch (or so) to the right, making space for HDMI output. This is an HD console, after all. Wonderfully, unlike even the most expensive models of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii U includes an HDMI cable right out of the box. Not a huge deal, but it sure was a baffling move when Sony and Microsoft both skimped on such an important detail.

The only other change we spotted (outside of the power port being flipped from horizontal to vertical) is the lack of GameCube controller ports up top. Say sayonara to those old Wavebirds, as Nintendo's moving on to its new tablet controller and its updated Pro Controller. Take some super close-up looks at all the minute differences with us below.

How much does a decent criminal law attorney usually cost? ? Legal ...

My brother charges $450 an hour billable.

My cigar friend charges $1,200 an hour (he?s a published author on International criminal profiling)

And I am on contract to three entities and receive $100,000 per contract although I don?t usually work more than 2,000 hours a year with each.

Then there are the ones just starting out who charge from $100 to 150 an hour.

but if you want bargain basement, an attorney who has been censured by the Ethics Committee will probably cost form $40 to $100 depending on how recent the violation is and for what it was.

Then again, if it?s a capital murder charge, add to the hourly billable rate any expert witnesses, preparation of exhibits, costs of investigations, documentation and other incidentals and your bill could reach from $100,000 to $1 million depending on the attorney and the complexity of the defense.

Love and Marriage ? Signs Along the Way?

Love and Marriage

The texts today speak about love and marriage, reminding me of the theme song from the first Fox TV hit ?Married with Children.? Many of you would know it better as a Frank Sinatra song originally used by Frank Sinatra in 1955?for the television production of?Our Town, a play by Thornton Wilder.

Love and marriage, love and marriage,?Go together like a horse and carriage.?This I tell ya, brother,?you can?t have one without the other.

Love and marriage, love and marriage,?It?s an institute you can?t disparage.?Ask the local gentry and they will say it?s elementary.

Try, try, try to separate them, it?s an illusion.?Try, try, try and you only come to this conclusion:

Love and marriage, love and marriage,?Go together like a horse and carriage.

Dad was told by mother you can?t have one?You can?t have none.?You can?t have one without the other.

Quaint 1950?s sentiment, hardly reflected in a world?when according the U.S. Census only 48% of American households are married. The institution of marriage is an illusion for many,?As quaint and antiquated as a horse and carriage.?Today 20% of households are ?traditional? families, that is married couples with children.?We live in a world where broken relationships,?abused partners, divorce, and abused children?are as much the reality today as they were in Jesus? day.

The texts today are less about the institution of marriage and divorce laws, as they are about justice and love. Jesus calls us out on our selfishness, and our oppression of those who are powerless. In the beginnings of Genesis and the time of Jesus, women and children were considered property of the man. And marriage was between a man and a woman because marriage was a baby-making institution, it had nothing to do with love, it included multiple wives, and slaves because the survival of the small and fragile tribes and kingdoms of the time depended on it.

A divorce could be decreed by a man for any reason, he was bored, one of his wives burned dinner, bore daughters instead of sons, or wasn?t able to bear children at all, the absurd list goes on and on. And children were to work and support the household, they were property, they were not the center of parents lives. Children were to be seen and not heard and in the Mark story today, the disciples try to keep the children away from Jesus, because that was the custom of the day.

But Jesus calls out? men, the institution marriage, the practice of divorce, the disciples and all who push aside fellow human beings to the margins, from women, to little children. Jesus values all people, and while Jesus lifts up love and marriage, he lifts up love and the value of relationships most of all. Jesus calls us out to live in love, to live with a personal and communal responsibility that does not throw away relationships, regardless of who they are between, and above all, does not throw away people.

We are to welcome all. We are to value all relationships. We are called to lives of love and to lives of justice that work to defend all?the defenseless. The relationships of our lives are all build on love. We do not control, as much as we think, or would like?

  • Who we are drawn to in relationship;
  • Who we are friends with; and
  • Who we fall in love with.

Relationships? whether between similar ?two peas-in-a-pod? individuals, or two ?total opposites? are largely a mystery. What attracts us, what compels us to live life together as family, friends, or lovers, and what caused challenges, pain and brokenness in relationships are also often a mystery. But regardless of the mystery and messiness, we are called to relationship, to share our hearts with one another and with our God, who is love and desires nothing more? than to be in relationship with us.

Jesus calls us out on our idealistic views about what makes a perfect child, family, friend, partner, or spouse. Jesus calls us out on our hardness of heart. Jesus names our selfish, sinfulness that places self-love at the center of our worlds and disposes of others to the trash heaps and margins of our lives as hard-hearted. Jesus is not saying that there are not times when ending a broken or abusive relationship is needed. Jesus reveals that there is a place for divorce because of the hardness of the human heart.Broken relationships are always caused by sin, and regardless of who?s heart hardened causing the brokenness, that brokenness?is always counter to God?s creational intention.

God calls us to be in balance. To be in relationship with God (a vertical relationship) and one another (horizontal relationship). This cross-shaped living is not news, I?ve preached on it before? but Jesus focuses and reminds us of this way of life again and again.?Hardness of heart happens, but it happens less when we are in relational balance. Love, that mysterious and messy thing, good gift and challenging choice, is sustainable only when our hearts and lives are in balance with God.

Loving our God, ourselves, and one another is God?s will and way. It is shown through the ultimate symbol and sacrifice of the cross. Our creator loves us so much that God pursues us and comes to us. In the flesh God gave Jesus, God?s Son to live as we do,?to experience love and loss, and ultimately to die for us, so that all that causes our hearts to harden may be forgiven. That we may be given fresh hearts each day, cleared of our selfish, sinful thoughts and desires to love anew. And to guide our days, bringing the mystery and majesty?of love in all its forms, and God gives us the Holy Spirit of love that is God to stay in our hearts and sustain us each day.

There is no illusion, our God who is love,?accepts, values and welcomes all people softening hardened hearts with abundant mercy, steadfast love, and amazing grace regardless of who we are, or whom we love.

  • When our human bonds are broken, God gives us grace and heals us still.
  • When we confess our human failures,?God forgives us and grants us peace.
  • When we think we are not worth loving, God loves us and sends us new beginnings,?????????????????????? ????????? ???? softens our hearts and gives us faith, hope and love.

Thanks be to God!

Archive ? TV producer Fry outlines best ways to use social media ...

SoJ Web Report | Oct. 7, 2012

By Aaricka Washington

When you ?Google? yourself, what comes up? Your Facebook? Your party pictures? Your fashion blog?

Deanna Fry, a television producer at Indianapolis? WTHR, asked members of the IU chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists these questions at the group?s meeting last week.

In her talk, Fry, BAJ?06,? outlined suggestions for students navigating social media and ways to turn social media into a branding tool. She emphasized the importance of a strong online presence, even for younger college students.

?I don?t care if you?re a freshman or a senior, it?s time to start branding yourself,? she said.

Using as an example her own online presence on Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and her websites, Fry outlined a number of tips.

First, protect your online presence.

?You are your best PR person,? she said. ?You have to protect your image. You have to make sure your image is squeaky clean. Whether you?re running for office or trying to get a job, you need to be that pristine on the Web.?

Second, Facebook is not for party photos.

?They should never exist on the Internet, because news directors and employers are Googling you,? she warned. ?If they see those pictures, sorry, no job for you.?

Next, create a LinkedIn profile.

?If you want to prepare for the business world, you want to have a site listing your qualifications,? she said. ?Complete your profile and make sure you edit it well, she advised.

Next, create your own website. You can create a website for free on a number of sites, including Word Press and Blogger, Fry said.

?It impresses employers and makes you more accessible to them if you have your portfolio, including your resume, in one central location,? she said.

Then, buy your domain name.

?It?s $10 on GoDaddy.com. That helps make you a brand,? Fry said. ?If someone has your name on dot com, you can get dot net or other suffixes.?

Create synergy with your professional social network sites.

?Have a photographer friend take a professional headshot of you and place it on all your social network sites,? she said. ?You should make sure that all your sites have the same identity.?

Fry ended the discussion by talking about the realities of the broadcast industry.

?Even now, in 2012, people of color have to strive to be better, much much better, than our colleagues,? she said.

She implored the group to think about positions other than being on-air talent. ?There are a number of positions in television,? the producer said. ?We need more decision makers of color. Reporters don?t make the decisions. Producers decide what reporters cover every day.?

Fry drew on her own career to encourage the members to get involved and to look ahead.

?I am the only black decision maker at WTHR; sometimes I lose,? she said. ?I want to see more African Americans, Latinos, Asians making decisions and controlling our image.?
