Ali Shaw & The Abingdon Writers Group ? Gaskella

Last night I went to a meeting of the Abingdon Writers Group to which they?d invited author Ali Shaw to speak, and opened it up to non-members as part of the 2012 Abingdon Arts Festival. First we heard from several members of the group who talked about their experiences, the benefits of having a support group of other writers to critique their work and egg them on; we heard about some of their successes too which have been notable for a young group. ?If you?d like to find out more do click through to the link above.

In the second half of the evening Ali Shaw gave a reading from his fab new novel The Man Who Rained (my review here). He chose a lovely passage where Finn (the man who rains) shows Elsa canaries made from sunbeams ? magical!

Ali talked a bit about his two novels and their inspirations. A vision of glass feet came to him on an escalator in Reading as the initial thought behind his first book The Girl with Glass Feet (my review here). ?That book was steeped in the fairy-tale traditions of Hans Christian Andersen.

The Man Who Rained draws its themes from folklore rather than fairytale which is full of ?capricious weather characters? and the devil in all his guises.?Ali told us how he had wanted to think about a time where the weather was more elemental in people?s life, and to bring that feeling into a contemporary setting.

He mentioned how he sees his books which, for anyone who hasn?t read him have a strong natural magic element, as general fiction ? glad that there is an increasing blurring of genres these days, so that more books that would have been pigeonholed as fantasy gaining a general readership. ?He mentioned The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey as an example, (my review here). ?However, he added rather mischieviously, everything goes back to folklore and fairytale.

His third novel has just been delivered to his agent. It?s about a forest which grows overnight, and a man who has to find his wife in a world transformed by the primal power of nature. ?Powerful images indeed ? sounds fantastic!

He also talked about how he writes, how the best ideas come from the back of his brain, and how he doesn?t plan out his novels before he starts. ?He encouraged the writers group, comparing its function to that of his Creative Writing MA, and urged them to keep writing and use the group.

Then he signed books, and I was delighted that he remembered me from his previous visit to Abingdon and my blog posts on his books. ?Nice guy, great writer and lovely books too.

LIFE AS A HUMAN ? Women's Advocacy or Viral Marketing?

progestinpills_large.ashxRecently my personal cyberspace has been inundated with blurbs about the so-called Republican ?War on Women,? mostly having to do with a conservative-led challenge to a national mandate that employers with religious objections to contraception and abortion be required to pay for insurance coverage for these services. It?s a genuine Constitutional issue. Freedom of conscience is an important safeguard against steamroller tactics propelling a society towards an enticing but ultimately disastrous trajectory. But somehow the messages that appear on bulletin boards assume that women have a right to compel others to pay for a particular form of contraception, and that this overrides the personal moral qualms of a nontrivial proportion of the population.

I?m skeptical about national grassroots movements. I?m skeptical about the seemingly spontaneous eruptions of political sentiment that occur in blogging networks and social media sites. Most of the people with whom I am connected are educated individuals with relatively high personal ethical standards, but they are not critical enough when it comes to forwarding socio-political messages whose ultimate source is unknown, and they sometimes inadvertently propagate misrepresentations that serve aims and entities far removed from the apparent goals of the campaign.

The issue in the contraceptive insurance debate is not whether women will have access to chemical birth control, but who is going to foot the bill. When chemical contraception first became available, it was generally an out of pocket expense, but in recent years more insurance plans have provided coverage and government subsidies have been available for low income women.

There remains, however, a large population for which contraception is still an out of pocket expense, and this limits what pharmaceutical companies can charge for the product. Jack the price of something up too high, and people will stop buying it ? unless there is a pressing need for it and no comparable substitute, or they are addicted to it, or it is paid for by a third party.

The first two conditions clearly do not apply. While no over the counter or behavioral method of birth control entirely matches the convenience and effectiveness of the Pill, some come close. Women do not experience withdrawal symptoms or physical craving when they stop taking hormonal birth control. Consequently, if the pharmaceutical industry is to maximize its profits on what is already a lucrative product line, they need to push the third party angle, lobbying for mandatory insurance coverage for the working population and government subsidies for those in the social welfare system.

There have been a number of instances recently where pharmaceutical companies have manipulated the FDA drug approval process to remove long-established generic drugs from the market, resulting in an order of magnitude increase in the cost of critical medications. Adding drug coverage to Medicare is at least correlated with this trend. The influence of major pharmaceutical companies in the FDA is immense; the public certainly cannot count on the Federal Government to be a neutral party when balancing the overall good against the corporate bottom line.

What is to stop the same thing happening with hormonal birth control? Not Planned Parenthood, which acts as Big Pharma?s chief salesman. Not the medical research community, which is funded by the pharmaceutical companies and the Federal Government and can easily come up with a study demonstrating that a long-established generic product is unsafe compared to a newly patented variant whose clinical history is unknown. To date, efforts through legislation to control medical costs have been woefully ineffective. There is no gatekeeper here.

The Real Cost of Birth Control?According to Planned Parenthood hormonal contraception costs between 5 and 60 dollars a month depending on the brand and type of insurance. This is the cost to consumer not the overall cost obviously. Figures in the article do not include the cost of a doctor?s visit required to obtain pills.

Can male pattern baldness help us to understand prostate cancer ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

It is well?understood that male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) and prostate cancer are both associated with levels of expression of?androgenic androgens like testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. However, there does not, in general, appear to be a direct correlation between male pattern baldness and risk for prostate cancer (or vice versa).

What is certainly true, as argued by Yassa et al., in a new paper initially published in Expert Reviews in Endocrinology and Metabolism and also accessible on the Medscape web site, is that a better understanding of the exact endocrinologic mechanisms of male pattern balding might help us to better understand the mechanistic drivers of prostate cancer (and to help us to distinguish between different types of prostate cancer).

Some regular readers may be particularly interested in the section of their paper in which Yassa et al. describe what we do and don?t know today about the underlying similarities and differences between the ways in which androgens may drive (or delay) the development of male pattern baldness and of prostate cancer. The authors are clear that this information does not provide us with any new diagnostic or therapeutic insights for either disorder at the present time. Their premise is only that a better understanding of the underlying biochemistry of androgenic alopecia might simultaneously enhance our ability to diagnose and treat prostate cancer.

Sales Training ? The Future - Business and Finance

The outdated challenges of gross sales training will remain as we come out of recession, to develop in trainees a excessive degree of communication expertise, self-group and a key understanding of the particular market(s) related to the salesperson and guaranteeing they implement the actions necessary to succeed. ?

IT will continue to dominate providing ever sooner entry to up to date information. This may allow gross sales people to provide clients correct information and feed data quickly back to base. This in turn means we are going to need salespeople who will be workforce members, and not loners. ?

As to the place the sales training perform should sit on a company group chart this is an attention-grabbing query, which begs the question about company attitudes to training in general. Organizations on this nation have been criticized for not taking coaching significantly enough. Specifically, the buck stops at the high ? the Gross sales and Marketing Director, if there?s one, the Chief Govt if there is not. The federal government has become more and more concerned in promoting training and training at all levels. At the time of writing it?s closely promoting leadership training and there are a number of grants out there to corporations desirous to specifically improve their leadership ? and this would come with gross sales leadership. ?

Continued training remains the accountability of line management, however responsibility lies also with the individual. To encourage individual responsibility some organizations have developed a system whereby the person sets out their own coaching programme. These are the so known as ?Learning Organizations?. In some cases this has given administration the excuse to abdicate accountability for training. This pattern should be reversed. ?

It is fascinating that all model chief firms still contemplate sales training as vitally vital, despite recent challenging times. Additionally it is a truth that the majority companies that have gone into liquidation had poorly developed training, or no dedication to coaching at all. Nearly with out exception, these corporations that invest in the training and development of their gross sales staff will let you know it?s an funding, not a cost. These individuals produce more enterprise, are highly motivated ? they usually?re enjoyable to work with too. ?

To ensure that somebody to turn into a top quality sales coach they need three issues: ?

1.?? The flexibility to relate to the extent of data and understanding of the pupil. Generally the most effective gamers make the worst trainers. ?

2.?? A great understanding of the function of a coach ? helping folks to learn ? not making an attempt to show how good they?re themselves. ?

3.?? Information of the subject. So to achieve the latter if not the previous, no less than 5 years sales expertise is needed, ideally in numerous markets, dealing with different products and totally different ranges of purchasers. ?

On the saying: ?When you can?t prepare, you cannot handle a gross sales staff?. I as soon as labored for H J Heinz, the meals firm, and so they used to put could be sales managers into sales coaching first. I think it is a good concept if it can be done. The human ego is likely one of the most fragile things on earth, and must always be dealt with sensitively.? ?

Training is the best proving ground for can be gross sales managers. They?ll learn to cope with people, the right way to get one of the best from them, and an entire host of other abilities that can finally stand them in good stead as a manager. ?

What proof is there that classroom based mostly gross sales coaching truly works? Classroom, if that?s the right word, is usually a highly efficient approach of imparting information and converting data into skill. This can be proved by setting studying objectives and measuring the trainee?s capability to satisfy objectives. ?

For instance, I?m a professional pilot, and I can tell you that classroom work is crucial to gain the data a pilot needs, and a simulator is a highly effective strategy to construct up skill levels.? ?

For salespeople, imparting knowledge within the classroom is a sensible manner to help folks learn and thru simulations you may significantly improve expertise and demonstrably measure these skills. ?

No doubt, gross sales trainers should be accomplished sales professionals, you need to be accomplished and educated about the subject. All our trainers are experts in their specific field. Actually DVD?s and different coaching aids assist, however my recommendation to would-be gross sales trainers is this. If you understand nothing about the topic, hold your mouth shut! ?

As for the Web, we?ve to do not forget that computers are machines and not human beings. So I count on human beings to be involved in coaching for so long as human beings have to be trained. It is also worth stating that one of many many benefits of head to head sales training is the elevated stage of motivation that delegates show when getting back from a course. This motivation stems from quite a lot of issues, similar to sharing experiences with others, and a feeling of private growth, however a whole lot of it comes from the course leader. Good sales trainers don?t just prepare, they inspire, and that?s something you?ll be able to?t get by browsing the online simply but!

Andrew Blackmore-Dobbyn: Performance Teaches Humility

It is 1978. I am performing the Chinese dance on tour in Act II of the Hartford Ballet's The Nutcracker. In Michael Uthoff's production, this dance is a duet featuring two men. We are wearing black wigs that seem to me more like a Prince Valiant pageboy hairdo than anything remotely resembling anything Chinese. There are silly bangs in the front while the back of it hangs down to my shoulders. I like the Chinese dance but the wig... not so much. Although I am only seventeen, my hair is already thinning so I use as many bobby pins as I can to make the wig stay on. The rest of the costume consists of a quilted, embroidered jacket, black pants, a paper umbrella and a sublimely ridiculous Fu Manchu mustache that has to be glued on with spirit gum. The mustache is my favorite part of the outfit. We have been promised an all new production for next season which will relegate the outdated Chinese costume to the bin. In the meantime, we are taking this tired production on the road to make some money.

The first stop the tour bus makes on every trip through New Hampshire is at a state liquor store. I am underage to buy liquor but figure that there's no harm in trying. When we make our first stop in New Hampshire I grab a few bottles of scotch and get in the checkout line behind one of the older dancers and make idle chitchat as though we're good friends. We're not but the ruse works and I get my scotch safely back on the bus. Pretty much all hell breaks loose as we share the booze around. Michael Uthoff is sitting up front pretending that he sees nothing. I'm seventeen. I'm drunk. Life is good.

There are lots of stops on the road all over the region of New England before we finally reach Tarrytown, N.Y., the last stop on the tour. This is not a great performance destination but a ballet company has to take any gig it can get during The Nutcracker season because this is the money the company needs to survive for the rest of the year. I feel like my first tour with the company is going well. Naturally this feeling has to come to an end.

All of the second act dances in The Nutcracker are pretty short, one or two minutes at most. Our Chinese dance lasts one minute and fifteen seconds. It's a fairly easy dance that gets a lot less applause than the Russian dance. Near the end of our dance, my partner and I have to successively do a double tour en l'air. Greg Evans, my partner, does his just fine. He always does nice tours. He is a natural, unlike me. I do my preparation and go into my double tour.

Double tour en l'air: you have to imagine doing this horizontally with a wig covering your eyes.

After the first rotation of my head, the bobby pins slip and the wig spins around my head and the back becomes the front. My world turns black and everything begins to move in slow motion. As I go into the second airborne turn, my body goes off at a crazy angle and I begin to realize that this is not going to end well. For a moment I believe that my body is rotating horizontally like the rotor blades of a helicopter even though I'm pretty sure this is physically impossible. Up and down have lost their meaning but not their reality as I discover when I land face first on the stage (complete with an audible 'oof') with my hands hanging over the edge and I can only watch helplessly as my wig flies off to join forces with the French horns down in the orchestra pit. Discovering that I am not badly damaged, I get up and finish the dance. This is not my proudest moment.

After the end of this matinee performance I am afraid I might be in some trouble so I keep a low profile, slinking quietly around the theater, waiting for the evening performance. Later in the afternoon, while Michael Uthoff is giving company notes to correct the mistakes from the matinee, everyone is waiting to see what he is going to say about my spectacular disaster. In turn, Uthoff takes care of issues related to spacing on stage and partnering glitches. The boss saves me for last, keeping us all waiting; he keeps looking at me out of the corner of his eye, trying to look angry but failing. Finally it's my turn. He looks at me and begins to speak but chokes on it. After covering his face briefly to regain his composure, Uthoff tries again to speak but can't keep a straight face. He just manages to say my name and then abandons all pretense. This is apparently the funniest thing that has happened all year and Uthoff laughs until tears roll down his cheeks and the whole company joins in. Looking back, this is when I truly learned to laugh at myself. In the big picture, the company needed a good laugh to relieve the accumulated stress and tension of a hard touring schedule.

To drive infections, a hijacking virus mimics a cell's signaling system

Monday, March 26, 2012

New biological research reveals how an invading virus hijacks a cell's workings by imitating a signaling marker to defeat the body's defenses. By manipulating cell signals, the virus destroys a defensive protein designed to inhibit it. This finding, from studies in human cell cultures, may represent a broader targeting strategy used by other viruses, and may lay the scientific groundwork for developing more effective treatments for infectious diseases.

"Learning details of how cells respond to viruses helps us to understand key cellular machinery better," said study leader Matthew D. Weitzman, Ph.D., of the Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "This study tells us how a virus overcomes intrinsic host defenses. In this case the virus mimics signals used during normal DNA repair mechanisms."

The study team, formerly based at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., published their current findings online March 8 in Molecular Cell.

Biologists have long known that viruses hijack cellular processes to replicate themselves, while host cells have evolved intrinsic defense systems to resist viral invasion. To replicate, viruses must deliver their own DNA into a cell's nucleus, so a viral infection entails a conflict between two genomes?the DNA of the host cell versus the foreign DNA of the virus.

Viruses mount their attack by interacting with specific cell proteins as a way of penetrating the cell's defenses. "In this study, we asked how the herpes simplex virus finds the specific proteins that it interacts with," said Weitzman. "By describing the mechanism of this particular interaction between a virus and a cell protein, we have pinpointed key regulators of a cell's processes, and shed light on how a cell regulates its defenses."

This laboratory study focused on herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1), a common human virus that results in recurrent infections alternating with inactive periods. Like other viruses, HSV-1 is known to manipulate cellular processes in order to infect cells, but the specific mechanisms by which it acts on the DNA repair pathway were previously unknown.

Weitzman's study team was studying a viral protein called ICP0 that overcomes host defenses by targeting cellular proteins for destruction. They found that ICP0 exploits phosphorylation, a chemical mark that is often used in cells to promote interactions between proteins, especially as part of the cellular signaling response to DNA damage. In HSV-1 infection, the phosphorylation signal on ICP0 attracts a cellular DNA damage response protein, RNF8, which binds to the false signaling marker and is then degraded. Because RNF8 normally inhibits viral replication, its destruction leaves the cell vulnerable to HSV-1 infection, as the virus takes over the cell's machinery.

The researchers also found that ICP0 exploits the same phosphorylation signal to bind to other cellular proteins in addition to RNF8, a hint that it may play a broader role in defeating antiviral defenses and manipulating cellular machinery. Weitzman will continue to investigate HSV-1 infection in neurons and in animal models. He also plans to extend his research into other viruses, which may act on different pathways than HSV-1 does. "Ultimately," he added, "better knowledge of molecular mechanisms in infection may suggest strategies to interrupt the viral life cycle and treat infections."

'The Voice' a positive for NBC in ratings

NEW YORK (AP) ? Of the three competition shows that dominate prime-time television, only NBC's "The Voice" is on the ascent.

The music contest with Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton as coaches is giving NBC something positive after years of bad news in the ratings. In only its second season, "The Voice" is competitive with Fox's "American Idol" and ABC's "Dancing With the Stars."

Its viewership is up 36 percent over last season, the Nielsen ratings company said. That number is somewhat skewed by a second season premiere that directly followed the Super Bowl, but even with that episode discounted, viewership is still up by 22 percent.

By contrast, "Idol" viewership is down 21 percent on Wednesday nights compared to last year and 20 percent on Thursdays, Nielsen said. ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" was the second most-popular show on TV last week with the premiere of its 14th cycle, but that was still down 17 percent from the first episode last spring.

"On a foundation night ? Monday night ? when we've had some trouble now we've got something that is holding its own and indeed winning one of the toughest nights on television," said Paul Telegdy, head of alternative programming at NBC.

The show's positive atmosphere, with coaches instead of judges, seems to have struck a chord, he said.

"Idol" and "Dancing" are also old by television standards, and that's reflected in their audiences, too. The median age of an "Idol" viewer this season is 48, Nielsen said, and the show had many more younger viewers when it was new. The first "Dancing" episode this season attracted an audience with a median ago of nearly 59. "The Voice" audience has a median age of 43.

"It's just human nature to think about what's new and what's fresh," Telegdy said.

Both "Dancing With the Stars" and the new "American Idol" had larger audiences than "The Voice" last week, Nielsen said. But in a measurement of viewers aged 18-to-49, the demographic NBC most cares about, "The Voice" was second only to Wednesday's "Idol" edition.

Fox landed in the week's top 10 with the strong premiere of Keifer Sutherland's new drama, "Touch," which had 11.8 million viewers. That's another reminder of the power of network TV: AMC's "Mad Men" received lots of ink for its season premiere and set its own record with 3.5 million viewers, but that was still less than half the people who saw "Touch."

CBS won the week, averaging 9.8 million viewers in prime time (6.2 rating, 10 share). ABC had 6.9 million (4.4, 7), Fox had 6.7 million (4.1, 7), NBC had 5.3 million (3.4, 6), the CW had 1.4 million (0.9, 2) and ION Television had 1 million (0.7, 1).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with an average of 3.7 million viewers (2.0, 3). Telemundo had 1.1 million (0.6, 1), TeleFutura had 610,000 (0.3, 1), Estrella had 230,000 and Azteca 140,000 (both 0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 8.3 million viewers (5.6, 12). ABC's "World News" was second with 7.1 million (4.8, 10) and the "CBS Evening News" had 6 million viewers (4.1, 8).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of March 19-25, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "NCIS," CBS, 19.06 million; "Dancing With the Stars," ABC, 18.79 million; "American Idol" (Wednesday), Fox, 17.21 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 16.17 million; "American Idol" (Thursday), Fox, 15.58 million; "Criminal Minds," CBS, 12.09 million; "The Voice," NBC, 11.95 million; "Touch," Fox, 11.81 million; "Castle," ABC, 11.52 million; "Two and a Half Men," CBS, 11.47 million.

Top-seeded Kentucky knocks off Indiana 102-90

ATLANTA (AP) ? They ran up and down the court, two storied programs going toe to toe.

In the end, Kentucky was just too big, too quick, too good for Indiana.

The top-seeded Wildcats moved another step closer to the only goal that matters in the Bluegrass State, shaking off a rather quiet night from freshman star Anthony Davis to pull away from the Hoosiers 102-90 in the South Regional semifinals Friday.

"It was a war and Indiana played great," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "We just happened to play a little bit better."

Kentucky (35-2) simply had too many weapons. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 24 points, Doron Lamb 21 and three of their teammates ? not Davis, mind you ? were in double figures. With that, the Wildcats dispatched the team that beat them back in early December and are off to a regional final for the third year in a row.

They'll face Baylor on Sunday for a trip to the Final Four.

"I feel like we did a pretty good job," said Kentucky's Darius Miller, who added 19 points. "So did Indiana. It was a very intense game. It was up and down for the most part. It was a fun game to be a part of, the way that both teams played."

Davis wasn't his usual dominating self after picking up two early fouls. He finished with nine points and 12 rebounds. So it was left to another of Kentucky's super freshmen to take the starring role. Kidd-Gilchrist had a double-double, also snatching 10 rebounds.

"In the huddles during timeouts, Michael was the guy firing us up," teammate Twany Beckham said. "It showed with his play."

Marquis Teague chipped in with 14 points and Terrence Jones 12.

Christian Watford had 27 points to lead the Hoosiers (27-9), who beat Kentucky 73-72 before Christmas but ended a comeback season with a loss to their border rival. Still, there was nothing to ashamed of, coming up two victories shy of the Final Four after winning a total of 28 games the previous three seasons.

Clearly, Indiana has regained its usual place among the college basketball bluebloods under coach Tom Crean.

"There's a lot of good things that have happened," Crean said. "This team has a lot of tremendous character, there's no doubt about that."

But Big Blue is moving on.

"We scored 90 points," Crean said. "They're a really good team. They've got a lot of guys. They've got a guy coming off the bench (Miller) who's going to be a first-round draft pick."

Indiana's freshman star, Cody Zeller, had 20 points, while Victor Oladipo provided a spark in the backcourt with 15 before fouling out. Kidd-Gilchrist just kept pounding the ball inside, drawing foul after foul on the Hoosiers, then knocking down the free throws. He went 10-for-10 at the line.

He wasn't the only one making free throws. Kentucky was a dead-eye 35-of-37 at the line, compared to 13-of-17 for the Hoosiers.

"It's not any big deal," Kidd-Gilchrist said. "We're just taking our time with free throws."

Jones, who had only four points in the December meeting, signaled this would be a different night by scoring Kentucky's first five points in the rematch. That set the tone for a shootout, both teams running and gunning in an exhilarating display that kept fans in both blue and red on their feet most of the time.

There certainly wasn't much to fear on the inside in the opening half, not with the two big men, Davis and Zeller, both spending much of the period on the bench, each saddled with two fouls.

Davis sat for the final 14:05 of the half, the Wildcats not wanting to take any chance on their best player picking up another foul. The 6-foot-10 center had two early blocks, but Indiana altered its offensive philosophy when he went to the bench. The Hoosiers started pounding the ball inside without fear of having it swatted away ? especially Watford.

The hero of the first game ? Watford made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer ? had 17 points by halftime, including a short jumper with 3? minutes left that capped a 21-10 stretch pushing the Hoosiers into the lead. Calipari quickly called a timeout with his team trailing 43-39, and Teague slammed the ball in frustration.

It was just a minor blip.

Miller hit a jumper, Indiana's Tom Prichard botched a left-handed dunk, and the Wildcats raced the other way, tying it up just like that on Jones' tip-in. They led 50-47 at the half and never surrendered their advantage the rest of the way.

Davis wasn't completely out of the loop. He also had three blocks, including an emphatic stuffing of Zeller when the Indiana big man tried to go under the basket and flip it in backhanded. Davis reached out his right hand and squashed the ball out of bounds.

He looks to have an even bigger impact against Baylor.

"This game is over," Davis said. "I have to just block it out and go on to Sunday's game."

Indiana had hoped for some more magic at the Georgia Dome, where they capped a surprising run to the championship game in 2002 before losing to Maryland.

After that, the Hoosiers fell on hard times. The scandalous regime of Kelvin Sampson left a massive rebuilding job for Crean, whose first three years were downright hideous ? 28-66 overall, 8-46 in the Big Ten, a stunning fall for a program of Indiana's stature.

This season, they turned it all around with a performance befitting the logo worn by many of their faithful who descended on Atlanta, "We're Back."

But this is "Cat-lanta," a frequent site of the Southeastern Conference tournament and familiar surroundings for Kentucky and its fans. The Georgia Dome is hosting the Final Four in 2013, and the Wildcats view it as merely a stopping-off point this year on the way to their ultimate goal.

Calipari arrived in the Bluegrass State three years ago with a one-and-done philosophy ? sign a bunch of the best high schools players every season, even if you know most of 'em are bound for the NBA after their freshman year.

It produced a regional final in 2010 and a trip to the Final Four last year.

This time, nothing less than cutting down the nets after the last game will do.

"This," Kidd-Gilchrist said, "is a good team."

Stuck with high gas prices, drivers just pump less

Americans have pumped less gas every week for the past year.

During those 52 weeks, gasoline consumption dropped by 4.2 billion gallons, or 3 percent, according to MasterCard SpendingPulse. The decline is longer than a 51-week slide during the recession.

The main reason: higher gas prices. The national average for a gallon of gas is $3.89, the highest ever for this time of year, and experts say it could be $4.25 by late April. As a result, Americans are taking fewer trips to restaurants and shopping malls. When they take a vacation, they're staying closer to home.

But the decline in gas consumption is also a sign that efforts to push carmakers to produce vehicles with better gas mileage are paying off. The average new car now gets nearly 24 miles to the gallon, compared with about 20 mpg just four years ago, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

"I'd expect to see lower gasoline consumption for several years to come," Rice University energy expert Ken Medlock says.

Americans have cut back on fill-ups for extended periods before. In 2008, gas spiked from $3.04 to $4.11 per gallon in seven months. It wasn't until January 2009, when the national average for gas had dropped to $1.86 that consumption increased. Drivers bought more gasoline for 23 weeks in a row.

"The spike in 2008 was a real shock to the system," Medlock says. "There's still a residual impact on people's driving behavior."

There were other stretches of reduced gas use, notably two into the 1970's and one in the early 1980's. But in those cases, Americans eventually went back to driving big cars and trucks that guzzled gas.

This time may be different. Medlock thinks economic growth will be too modest and gas prices will stay too high for Americans to start driving more anytime soon. Economists expect the U.S. economy to grow 2.5 percent in 2012. The government estimates that gas will average a record $3.79 per gallon for the year.

John Gamel, who oversees MasterCard SpendingPulse's weekly consumption report, points to rising sales of fuel-efficient vehicles.

"People have gotten used to elevated prices and they've made their long-term purchases," Gamel says. "They're going to be using less fuel."

Consumers now care more if a car gets good gas mileage than if it's reliable, stylish or comes with a great deal, according to a survey of more than 24,000 new-vehicle owners taken last summer and fall by J.D. Power and Associates. That wasn't the case in the nine previous years that J.D. Power conducted the survey.

Automakers have listened to consumers, and responded to stricter government fuel economy requirements. They've improved engines and transmissions so cars burn less fuel. They've also made cars more aerodynamic, boosting mileage by cutting wind drag. The government is gradually increasing gas mileage requirements so that by 2025, cars and trucks will have to average 54.5 mpg.

Between February 2011 and February 2012, the combined city-highway mileage of a new vehicle sold in the U.S rose to 23.7 mpg from 22.7. Better gas mileage has a huge impact on the overall economy. At $3.86 per gallon, U.S. drivers would save $35.8 billion per year with a 1 mpg improvement for the entire fleet of cars, trucks and buses, according to Michael Sivak, a research professor with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

Consumers would appreciate the help. The rise in gas prices has been so steep that they're still spending more on gas than a year ago despite using less.

Gasoline prices rose by 24 percent in the last 52 weeks, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. MasterCard, which collects purchase receipts from more than 100,000 service stations around the country, said spending on gas rose by 20 percent during the period.

In 2011, Americans spent 8.4 percent of their household income on gasoline, or about $4,155, compared with 6.7 percent in 2010, according to experts at OPIS.

W.M. Lewis, a general contractor in Anchorage, Alaska, says he is spending as much as $150 a week on gas. He's consolidating his errands, but still limiting his driving because fuel keeps getting more expensive.

"It's changing everybody's plans," he says. "You have less money to spend."

Behind all this is the high price of oil. Brent crude, which is used to price most of the oil used to make gasoline at many U.S. coastal refineries, has jumped by 16 percent this year to more than $124 per barrel. Benchmark U.S. crude has risen 9 percent this year to more than $107 per barrel.

Increased gas use by the growing number of drivers in China and other developing nations more than makes up for the drop in the U.S. That contributes to an increase in global demand for oil, which in turn pushes the price higher. Fear of a disruption to oil supplies from the Middle East also is keeping oil prices at lofty levels.

Woman indicted for stalking Yankees executive Cashman

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman watches a bullpen session at the team's spring training camp in Tampa

updated 7:26 p.m. ET March 21, 2012

NEW YORK - A British woman accused of stalking Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has been indicted by a grand jury, prosecutors said in a Manhattan criminal court Wednesday.

Louise Neathway, 36, was arrested last month after prosecutors said she harassed Cashman and convinced him to pay her $6,000 following what her lawyers called an inappropriate relationship.

Neathway was also indicted on charges stemming from a 2010 harassment case involving another, unnamed individual.

The exact nature of the charges against Neathway, who is also known as Louise Meanwell, will remain sealed until her arraignment April 11.

According to a criminal complaint filed by prosecutors in February, Neathway tried to extort $15,000 from Cashman by threatening to go to the media with details that would "damage his personal relationships and professional reputation." His wife reportedly filed for divorce after the Neathway story broke.

Cashman eventually sent her $6,000 in two payments in January, but Neathway demanded more, according to prosecutors. She also repeatedly called him and sent him text messages even after he asked her to stop, the complaint said.

Neathway, who previously denied the allegations through her lawyers, did not speak during her court appearance. She remains in jail on $200,000 bail.
