What breed of bird should I get? - Pet care and feed

I have had previous experience owning a bird when I was a child, I had a budgie. I?m now 18 and I?d like to get another (or 2) pet bird(s).
I would be able to interact with it 4 ? 5 times a week, possibly more unless I am away on holiday. I am at college full time though, and working several days a week during summer. It will be able to be let out of the cage to exercise a lot too though, when I am home, 5 or 6 times a week.
I can afford a decent amount of money for supplies but I wouldn?t like to pay anything ridiculous as I?m only a student.
I want a bird that is smart (perhaps can learn to whistle songs or talk), playful and not too difficult to tame, and affectionate but not to the point where it can?t deal with not being with its owner constantly. So a bit of independancy from it would be good, something that can manage on it?s own or not get bored. Also, when tame, it would be easier if it could stay tame rather than go wild in like?a week.
Like I said, I am willing to buy 2 birds if necessary, to keep each other company. I really like lovebirds as they?re very pretty and can be friendly but I?ve heard cockatiels are affectionate yet still independant, but I do need one that won?t take years to train.
I have room for a medium sized bird cage, and my bedroom is quite large so they will have plenty of exercise space. I have also done research on the breeds.

Opinions and advice, perhaps from experienced owners, would be lovely. Thanks.

A single Cockatiel, buy one that is hand-fed from a breeder. These are tame since they are used to humans since hatching. There minimum cage size for one Cockatiel is 20" wide x 20" deep, height isn?t to important, it should be about 24" high. Though, if your going to get a bigger cage get width and depth.

Unlike most people think birds don?t live of seeds and occasional fruit. There diet should be half vegetables, half seed daily. Fruit and nuts should be given as a snack. Avoid feeding to much sunflower seeds and peanuts.

Lovebirds got there name because they are so loving/cuddly towards there own species, they are aggressive towards other species. They are also known to be pluckers. In my opinion they may be small but they are not beginner birds.

Usually when you have two birds together they will bond with each other and not the human.

Cockatiels live about 15-20 years.

Budgies are active and playful birds.
Cockatiels are fun and loving birds.

The Cockatiel will need a hour of your attention per day.

Parakeet I own 2their are so cute and adorable and funny my boy bird is very clumsy and the girl is a adventurs type of bird :) I got my 2 at Disnes Petshop For $35 together but I don?t think u live in Pennsylvania

Get a parakeet from PetSmart. They are seriously low maitnence, cheap to take care of, and they bring a lot of happiness to your home. I hope I helped!

You could get a hand raised Cockatiel, they are very friendly after they have been hand raised and cockatiels can make great pets and are easy to look after. We have 3 male cockatiels out in an aviary with other parrots budgies & other cockatiels and they have learnt to whistle tunes and one even say hello because I spent about 5 minutes a day whistling and trying to teach them to say hello. It really does not take much, They are very intelligent! However cockatiels can live to about 25 and you said that you did not want this
