According to a recent survey from "New Business" magazine, more than 30% of the UK?s working population have a desire to start their own businesses. Yet 49% of these have no immediate plans to embark upon that dream, with only 14% claiming this year is a better time than last to take the plunge.
In the end, it is estimated that only 5.9% of all those people that want to start their own business will actually take the leap into self employment. So what is it that?s stopping people and how can we remove the barriers? Nathan Siekierski of Jasper's Franchise Ltd believes franchising has the answers:
Nathan says: "I?ve been there. Starting a business from scratch is a significant risk and commitment, but there is an alternative way. If we look at the top four reasons why people don?t start their own business, we find that, in each of these reasons, franchising can remove the barriers."
The top four areas are:
1. Money
The most common reason that people don't or can't start a business is cash ? or lack of it. Without the necessary start-up capital, many great business ideas never get off the ground.
Nathan says: "An experienced franchisor will have good relationships with top lending institutions because of the proven success of their franchise model. There are 897 different franchise systems in the UK ? everything from a few thousand pounds investment to millions of pounds. Financing a new franchise is something a franchisor can help and advise with, and the banks much prefer a solid, proven franchise over an independent start-up."
2. Security
The thought of losing the security of a steady income and benefits keeps many would-be entrepreneurs in the corporate world.
Nathan says: "Having a franchise puts someone in charge of their own ship in a fleet. They are no longer just an employee at the mercy of managers, HR departments or efficiency savings. Job security these days is not what it was, yet even in tough times, good franchise models are thriving. Since 2006, the sector?s turnover, and number of franchise systems, have both grown by 15%, despite a UK GDP growth rate of only 9.4% in the same period."
3. Competition
Ideas of "building a better mousetrap" can bring out the entrepreneurial spirit in some. Others may find their idea already exists and they?re not sure how they can differentiate themselves or successfully compete in the same market. Therefore they quickly give up on an idea.
Nathan says: "There is no race if there is no competition. A proven franchise model should be at the cutting edge of the market, outperforming the competition. A franchisee invests in proven business systems that put them ahead of the competition. It?s no wonder that in a recent British Franchise Association survey, four out of five surveyed say being part of the franchise model offers them a competitive advantage over similar businesses that aren?t."
4. Lack of Ideas
Some people want to be their own boss but haven't a clue what to do. This leads to confusion, fear and ultimately giving up on a business dream.
But as Nathan says: "It?s not good ideas that make a business successful, it?s the application and people that count. That?s what franchising is all about ? taking a proven product or service and following a successful franchise model that is working in all parts of the UK."
Nathan advises that the first step for those interested in running their own franchise should be to think about their skills and interests, and the kind of investment they?re comfortable making. Then they should look for franchisors that, like Jasper?s, are members of the British Franchise Association (BFA), have Investor In People status and have good relationships the banks. Then go on Discovery Sessions and get talking to existing franchisees.
Above all, Nathan says: "Remember, we only have one life! So whilst we?re here we should chase and live our dreams."

Most people think that the only ways that you could get dropped from your auto insurance policy would be to have a DUI arrest or conviction, have gotten too many traffic citations, or have been involved in too many accidents. The man had two, count them two cracked windshields in a 30 day period. Now, cracked windshields do not break the bank to fix, so if you live near a school, baseball field, or golf course then you may want to move or park your vehicle in a garage.
4. Stationary Accidents
Another
woman was dropped from her car insurance provider because her car was hit while it was not moving on two separate occasions. Now, risk is one thing, but if your car is not being driven then why should an insurer be able to drop you when someone else hit you? Why would you even be considered to be a risk to insure when you were not even near your car and could not avoid the collision happening in the first place? The person was unlucky but not everyone gambles and wins every single time and insurers should know that and not punish someone for unforeseen circumstances.
5. Identity Theft
One
California woman had her auto insurance canceled due to identity theft. A female identity thief used her checking account information to fraudulent open an auto insurance account with another insurance provider and then she did not ever pay the premiums again. This led to the woman being dropped from her insurance provider because someone else stole her information and had not paid the premiums on time each month.
6. Accidents Over the Long Term
A
man who filed claims for three very minor fender benders over a period of 15 years ended up being dumped from his auto insurance company. The damage totaled less than $5000 in all three accidents yet he was deemed to be too big of a risk to insure. Most people would agree that cancelling under such conditions is a bit absurd.
7. Bounced Checks
Finally,
a man in Maine had his insurance policy canceled because he let his premium checks bounce two times in two years. The auto insurance company said that lack of payment was taken into consideration and that they could no longer underwrite a policy for him with their insurance company. It would have been much simpler for them to simply collect payment from the customer, and not only recover the customer, but prevented them from sharing their poor experience with others.
It seems as though car insurance policies have become increasingly difficult for drivers to secure for the long term, which is now due much in part to auto insurance fraud and other issues. There are millions of vehicles on the road and sadly accidents happen every single day. It is important for people that have been told that their car insurance is being canceled because they need to purchase a policy through another provider before the cancellation is completed.
Receiving an insurance policy cancellation letter is no fun. Once a person has their car insurance policy canceled, it is not just a headache that they face; they will also face massive insurance premium hikes. Auto insurance companies are not really ?independent? in the sense of the word. They all can access the same information about each driver that applies for an insurance policy through their company. If say Insurance-Company-A sees that Insurance-Company-B has canceled a driver?s insurance policy then they will get suspicious and will be less likely to underwrite a policy. Ah-ha!? You need digital music!? Entry ? the iPod!
3) Determine ways how YOUR company can address the problem for YOUR target market.? One of the challenges developing nations experienced was that while they were able to get cell phones, there was not enough infrastructure for them to plug them in and recharge them.? Odd, I think.
4) Consider what skills, education Or resources you are going to need to fill the need you?ve uncovered.
Unconventional is not necessarily linked to a product or service in the typical sense?it could be in your customer service, the style of your dress or decor, the level of service, etc.
Watch and learn from the world around you.? Constantly learn from everything you see.? Write things down.? Build an extraordinary business.? Be unconventional.
