If you wanted to have a home built in a new neighborhood, and wanted it to stand out so that people ? neighbors, friends and family ? might be attracted to it, you might find or seek out ways to distinguish the house from all others on the block while appealing to their interests and tastes.? You might even want to look at what their homes look like or ask them, directly, what they might be interested in.? Additionally, you might make it with extra guest rooms, a game room, a kitchen and dining room that could accommodate the additional guests.
Once you?ve gotten an idea of what you want to do, you would approach an architect ? someone who could help you put your ideas on paper so you could begin planning how much you intend to spend in order to make the house meet the needs of your interests.
In the same way, business growth should be planned out.? Unlike a home, you have to think in terms of the changing nature of businesses.? Nevertheless, you will still face the following questions:
a) How can you build it so it will stand out
b) How can the company accommodate the number of clients you wish to serve?
c)? How can your company address the needs of your target market in a way that isn?t ?business as usual? for your clients?
d)? How much will it cost?
e)? Are the outcomes greater than the cost??
In the same manner you would use an architect to design your home, you would use a business architect to help you design your business.
By taking the time to design the company differently ? taking into consideration your market, their interests and expectations in addition to planning for the growth you expect, you are essentially planning for growth and success.? Growth and success DO NOT HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT!? They do require planning.? Making a dent in your marketplace, however, will require that you seek to become unconventional.
Unfortunately, there aren?t six clear steps to becoming unconventional.? Unconventional starts with ideas that are planted, nurtured and grown.? Here are some stepping off points for you:
1) Observe your target market. Sometimes they have needs they don?t even realize because no one is meeting those needs or not meeting them in a way that is either sustainable or addresses the complete problem.?
2) Look at how that gap has been addressed in the past, how similar industries might currently address a similar problem or challenge and ASK people what they would like to see as a result of the challenge they have.? ?I love listening to my discman (a portable CD player that came with headphones) but my CD?s are always getting messed up.?? Ah-ha!? You need digital music!? Entry ? the iPod!
3) Determine ways how YOUR company can address the problem for YOUR target market.? One of the challenges developing nations experienced was that while they were able to get cell phones, there was not enough infrastructure for them to plug them in and recharge them.? Odd, I think.
4) Consider what skills, education Or resources you are going to need to fill the need you?ve uncovered.
Unconventional is not necessarily linked to a product or service in the typical sense?it could be in your customer service, the style of your dress or decor, the level of service, etc.
Watch and learn from the world around you.? Constantly learn from everything you see.? Write things down.? Build an extraordinary business.? Be unconventional.
